Village Books: Meet the owners!
Village Books is owned by the husband & wife team of Jerry Karp and Stephanie Gold. Both Jerry and Stephanie were born and raised in northeastern New Jersey, but they met and fell in love 3,000 miles away in San Francisco, where'd they'd both been living for over 20 years! Both have a life-long love of books and reading. They moved to beautiful Boonville, CA, in 2008.
Jerry began his professional life in New Orleans as a jazz/blues DJ and producer at WWNO, the local NPR affiliate. After seven years on the airwaves, he came to San Francisco to study for a Masters Degree in Creative Writing at San Francisco State. After earning that degree, Jerry taught English composition, creative writing and ESL for four years. Next stop was four years as the Publications Coordinator at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. In 2000, Jerry left the Fed and went out on his own as a freelance writer, calling his business Rocket Words. Perhaps the highlight of that time was the five years he spent as a jazz journalist, writing about music for the SF Chronicle, Down Beat Magazine and other publications. He spent a happy year as the PR rep for Jazz at Pearl's nightclub. Taking over Village Books represents a dream come true for this book loving Jersey boy!
Stephanie came to San Francisco in 1984. She has dedicated her career to her twin loves, writing and education. Early in her career, she wrote travel guidebooks to Israel and San Francisco and wrote as a freelance writer, including time as a reviewer for Amazon back in the days when Amazon actually paid writers. Stephanie also began offering her expertise and passion for learning as a teacher at Potrero Hill Middle School and Raoul Wallenberg and as a guidance counselor at Chinese American International School. Stephanie returned to the freelance writing world in 2003 and was soon publishing articles in magazines like Psychology Today, Technology & Learning and More Magazine. She's recently written two pieces for California Magazine profiling Caspar, CA, and the Anderson Valley Salsa Cookbook Project. In September 2009, Stephanie became the counselor for Anderson Valley High School and Middle School.
As Stephanie will be sticking with her job at AVHS&MS (they couldn't possibly spare her!), it will be Jerry that you'll mostly see around the store. But if you come often enough, you're sure to get to meet Stephanie, as well!
So that's who we are. Come into Village Books and let us know who you are! In time, we hope to add a customers' page to this site, In the mean time, come on in and introduce yourself. We'd love to meet you!
